AI Overviews
AI Overviews are Google's generative-AI answers that appear at the top of search results pages, synthesizing information from web sources into a direct response.
AI Overviews are generative-AI-powered answers Google serves at the top of search results for eligible queries. Instead of sending users to a ranked list of blue links, Google synthesizes information from multiple source sites into a single direct answer, with citation links back to the original pages.
Originally launched in 2024 as Search Generative Experience (SGE) and rolled out as AI Overviews in 2025–2026, this surface has become the dominant above-the-fold outcome for informational queries. Studies from Ahrefs (56M-AIO scan, 2026) and ALM Corp show AI Overviews cite pages ranked outside the top 10 organic positions more than one third of the time, making them a distinct optimization surface from classical SEO.
Why AI Overviews Matter
Users who get satisfactory answers from AI Overviews frequently do not click through to source pages — the zero-click effect. For brands, this means a site can rank #1 organically and still lose the traffic to AI Overviews. The way to win is to become a cited source in the AI Overview itself.
